# Directions:
01 - In a bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
02 - Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
03 - Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing just until the dough forms.
04 - Shape the dough into a disk, wrap tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
05 - Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
06 - On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/5 inch (5 mm) thickness.
07 - Using heart and star cookie cutters, cut shapes and make a small hole near the top for ribbons.
08 - Arrange the shapes on the prepared sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until edges turn just golden.
09 - Allow cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
10 - Combine powdered sugar with lemon juice or water to create a smooth, spreadable glaze; add food coloring if desired.
11 - Spread icing on cookies as desired and let dry completely.
12 - Thread decorative ribbons through the holes and tie into bows once icing is set.
