02 - 1 bag (10 oz) mini marshmallows
03 - 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
04 - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

→ Coloring

05 - Red gel food coloring
06 - Blue gel food coloring

→ Decoration

07 - Red, white, and blue sprinkles

# Directions:

01 - Line a 9x9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease the surface.
02 - Divide the marshmallows and butter into three equal portions, approximately 3⅓ cups marshmallows and 1 tablespoon butter for each color layer.
03 - In a large saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3⅓ cups marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Stir in red gel food coloring until desired shade is achieved. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until evenly coated. Press firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
04 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add 3⅓ cups marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in vanilla extract. Add 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over the red layer.
05 - Wipe the saucepan clean, then melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter over low heat. Add remaining marshmallows and stir until melted. Stir in blue gel food coloring. Add remaining 2 cups Rice Krispies and mix until coated. Gently press over the white layer.
06 - Sprinkle the top with red, white, and blue sprinkles while the surface is still slightly warm.
07 - Allow treats to cool and set for at least 1 hour. Lift from the pan using the parchment paper, slice into 16 equal squares, and serve.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • They come together faster than you'd expect, and the three-layer effect makes people think you spent way more effort than you actually did.
  • Kids and adults both get excited about the colors, but the vanilla note in the white layer keeps it from feeling too candy-like.
  • You can prep them hours ahead, so you're free to actually enjoy the party instead of cooking in a hot kitchen.
02 -
  • Do not use liquid food coloring no matter what the bottle says or how convenient it seems—it will turn your beautiful treat into a sad, wet mess that never sets properly.
  • The one-hour cooling time is not a suggestion; I learned this the hard way when I tried to slice treats that were only half-set and basically gave myself a marshmallow stress ball instead of neat squares.
03 -
  • Grease your hands with a tiny bit of butter before pressing each layer—it's the fastest way to prevent sticking without adding unnecessary moisture to your treats.
  • If you want deeper, richer colors, use slightly more gel coloring than you think you need; the color fades slightly as things cool, so what looks almost too dark while warm will be exactly right once set.
